Number of Black-owned Small Businesses Continue to Grow Despite Economy
by Anonymous

Dayton, OH - Due to the dismal economy Americans have faced for nearly three years, more African-Americans are turning to small business ownership to secure their economic futures.

Rhonda Winn, owner of Cypher-SDG.com, says that generally, the increase of small businesses within the African-American community is a direct result of high unemployment rates amongst blacks coupled with highly publicized success stories featuring African-Americans. "As of last month, the unemployment rate rose to 6% which accounts for 8.8 million unemployed individuals. The unemployment rate for blacks, which is currently at 10.9%, more than doubles the rate for whites and is the highest rate among ethnic groups. Historically, minorities and the working class within this country are hit the hardest during an economic crisis." Winn refers to the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Department of Labor as her two main sources of data.

"As a result of the current labor situation, many workers have become disillusioned and frustrated with job searches that can take up to a year to actually result in employment. Entrepreneurship helps ease the stress lack of work causes and allows people to control their lives to a greater degree."

"At the end of last year, Black-owned businesses totaled well over a half-million. Black business development continues to grow at a rate higher than the U.S. average."

Winn maintains that an additional tool for entrepreneurs is the Internet, as it provides unlimited exposure with minimum start-up costs. In many cases, individuals can continue to search for full-time employment or work part-time while operating a small business. "The Internet and a well-developed visual identity can help black business owners to network like never before and reach a much larger consumer base than operating without the Internet," states Winn.
